Concourse D Widening: Transforming ATL’s Aviation Experience

Sovereign Construction & Development delivers complex aviation infrastructure projects that enhance passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, and support the evolving demands of modern air travel. Working alongside industry-leading partners, Sovereign has contributed to transformative projects at some of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs, helping shape the future of aviation through innovation, collaboration, and quality-driven construction.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport – Concourse D Widening

At the world’s busiest airport, Sovereign Construction & Development is part of the team delivering the landmark Concourse D Widening project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Originally constructed in the 1980s for smaller regional aircraft, Concourse D had become the narrowest and most constrained concourse at ATL, requiring modernization to meet growing passenger demand and accommodate larger aircraft.

The $1.4 billion expansion project is transforming the concourse into a brighter, more spacious, and highly efficient environment designed for today’s travelers and future aviation growth.

Project Highlights

  • Expansion of the concourse footprint by approximately 60%

  • New and widened passenger holdrooms and circulation areas

  • Increased ceiling heights and expansive glass curtain walls for natural light

  • Modernized restrooms and enhanced passenger amenities

  • Infrastructure upgrades to support Group III aircraft, including Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A321neo aircraft

  • Improved wayfinding and passenger flow throughout the concourse

The project also incorporates sustainable and forward-thinking design elements, including self-tinting smart windows that reduce heat and glare while maximizing daylight and airfield visibility.

Phased Delivery in an Active Airport Environment

Construction is being completed in multiple phases to ensure uninterrupted airport operations and minimize impacts on passengers and airline partners. Phase 1 successfully delivered approximately 21,000 square feet of new boarding-level space and reopened six upgraded gates on an accelerated schedule.

Future phases will continue expanding and modernizing Concourse D through 2029, ultimately improving passenger capacity, operational efficiency, and overall traveler comfort.
