A New Beginning on Auburn Avenue: Front Porch Welcomes the Community

Sovereign Construction and Development is proud to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Front Porch project on Auburn Avenue, a milestone in revitalizing one of Atlanta’s most historic corridors. Just two blocks from Ebenezer Baptist Church, this $37.5 million mixed-use development brings new life to Sweet Auburn with thoughtfully designed residential and commercial spaces.

At the opening, civic leaders, community members, and project partners gathered to experience the vision firsthand. The entrance to the Front Porch feels like an open-air living room, setting the tone for a welcoming environment where community and culture come together.

Building with Purpose

Front Porch is the first new development along this stretch of Auburn Avenue in nearly 20 years, a fact that underscores its significance. With support from the Eastside Tax Allocation District through Invest Atlanta, the project delivers both affordable housing options and commercial opportunities while preserving the historic fabric of the neighborhood.

“No historic buildings were demolished,” said Mtamanika Youngblood, longtime leader of the Historic District Development Corp. (HDDC), co-developer of the project. “Today marks another milestone for Sweet Auburn.”

Designed for Community Living

Phase one of the project introduces 33 co-living residential units with 67 total bedrooms. Each fully furnished apartment is rented per bedroom, making it easier for residents to find an affordable, move-in ready home.

The ground floor is designed for restaurants and retail, activating the streetscape while residential spaces rise above. Unique amenities include a rooftop garden for urban agriculture and stunning views of downtown, reinforcing the project’s balance between modern living and community connection.

One particularly meaningful detail is the incorporation of stained glass from the adjacent historic Haugabrooks Funeral Home, now being repurposed into an art gallery and event venue.

Open, Inclusive, and Welcoming

Unlike many new developments, Front Porch will not be a gated community. Instead, it is intentionally designed to be open to Auburn Avenue, with public-facing spaces that invite neighbors, visitors, and businesses to engage.

“We want this to be inclusive and open,” said Michael Hatcher, co-developer of the project. “The Front Porch is meant to be just that—the front porch for the entire Auburn Avenue community.”

Collaboration and Leadership

The Front Porch is the product of collaboration among multiple partners:

  • Historic District Development Corp. (HDDC) – Co-developer
  • Syntony Design Collaborative – Architectural design, led by Garfield L. Peart, in partnership with Cole Hil Architects
  • Cooper Carry – Construction administration
  • Integral – Property management
  • Colliers – Leasing

Together, these organizations have brought forward a project that respects the past while investing in the future.

For Sovereign Construction and Development, the Front Porch is more than a building—it’s an opportunity to create spaces where history, community, and progress thrive together.
